Type I collagen is the most plentiful collagen in the body and is present in the dermis, bone, tendon, and other connective tissues. An abnormality in Type I collagen, not Type III, leads to osteogenesis imperfecta.

Type II collagen is found in cartilage, such as the vitreous body and the nucleus pulposus of the intervertebral disk. It is not typically associated with this type of skin fragility or blistering.

The patient's clinical presentation is consistent with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome type IV, also known as vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which is caused by a defect in the synthesis of type III collagen. This type of collagen is abundant in the walls of blood vessels, the intestinal wall, and the uterus, all of which can rupture in these patients, leading to serious complications.

Type IV collagen is found in the basement membrane, which underlies epithelial and endothelial cells. Alport syndrome, not Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, results from an abnormality in Type IV collagen synthesis resulting in hematuria, hearing loss, and ocular disturbances.
