Um, so yeah, there are two types of substance use, there's hazard, hazardous use, um and harmful use and hazardous use is basically the likelihood that it's going to cause harm if it continues at this level. So it's not causing harm at the moment, but it's likely to cause harm in the future. And then harmful use is that it's actively causing damage to the health, mental or physical of the user um involving adverse social consequences as well. And then you have two important definitions which you need to know. So addiction and dependence, addiction is basically um compulsive drug use despite harmful consequences. So you're using something even though you know, it's harmful towards you, and then dependence is basically a physical adaptation to a substance. So if you, you have things like tolerance to a substance or you're getting withdrawal symptoms from a substance that's dependent, so you can be addicted to something um and dependent on it, but you can't necessarily be dependent on something and addicted to it because the dependence is all about that uh physical adaptation to the substance. Ok? Um So yeah, dependence syndrome, basically by the ICD 10 diagnostic criteria is made, it is basically made of six things. So one, you have a strong desire or compulsion to take a substance.
