IMG VIRTUAL SIMULATION PROGRAMME - SESSION 2
Summary
This virtual session, led by deputy lead Dennis from the Minder Bleep IMG team, introduces Daniel from the British Medical Association (BMA). Daniel discusses the role of the BMA, a professional body and trade union for doctors and medical students in the UK, and the various benefits associated with BMA membership, such as support with non-clinical issues, contract negotiation, immigration support, access to the British Medical Journal (BMJ), and 24/7 well-being support. He announces an offer where new members can get their first-year membership free, and an average 22.3% pay rise for members due to recent strikes. Daniel encourages prospective members to join the BMA, mentioning a potential future ballot for strike action in recent pay negotiations. The session concludes with Daniel urging guests that membership would provide them with a voice and support in the UK medical industry.

Hello there. Good evening. Uh My name is Dennis. I'm one of the deputy lead for the Minder Bleep I MG team. Uh Welcome to our virus virtual simulations. Um This is the second session so far. Um To begin the sessions, we'll have um Daniel here who is a representative from the BMA British Medicare Association to talk to us about the organizations and what they do. So I will hand it over to you then. Cool. Thanks. Sounds everybody about tell me I won't be long at all. I'll be super quick. I'll just put something in the chat. I want to be able to see that. Um If you guys are watching back on on demand, is it, is it, were this, this still applies as well? So everything I say is still relevant, um Just make sure you keep a, keep a, keep a count on the the link I put in the chat and, and the QR code I've put on the screen. Um So yeah, you can do this any time, but just yeah, just stay in touch, stay in touch, stay in touch with me. Um So yeah, so if you've never been a member for the BMA. I we'll get on to explain um exactly what the BMA is and what the BMA does. Um If, if you're, if you're unsure. Um But yeah, if you've never been a member before, um take advantage of this offer, um If you join today, you'll get your first year. Sorry, I was trying to speak. Um Yeah, join today and you'll, you'll get or join when you, when you can and, and you'll get your first year membership free. So just use that QR code. Um So yeah, just follow, follow the, the membership um link through. Um I'm a doctor of GMC number and then it's very importantly when you get to the concessions page you tick um I MG first year in the UK and then, and then that, that'll trigger it to be your, your first year for, you don't have to stay beyond that year as well. The second year will be 10 lbs a month, but we'll write to you and explain all that before the end of that first year. So that'll be a very good um offer is something that we've started doing uh fairly recently in the last few years. Um Yeah, just giving, just giving Im GS who, who are new to the UK um free membership. It's usually around sort of 3 to 400 lbs for, for docs in the UK. So it's um yeah, good, good offer. So, very important if you did want to join. Um yeah, follow all those steps or whatever, click, click I MG first in in UK and then um once that's all done, just make sure you drop me an email so I can just double check cos I don't want you um accidentally having to pay so we can just make sure 100% that, that you got your first year free. So yeah, drop, drop me an email detail at bma.org dot UK and I'll and I'll just check, you'll just, I'll put the instructions in the chat. But yeah, that's a pretty simple way of doing it and and make sure you get it. Ok, cool. So uh what was the BMA? I'll try and be as quick as possible with this but yeah, the BMA is essentially your trade union. Um So trade union in the UK for, for doctors and medical students. Um We support everything nonclinical. So you may have heard of Indemnity insurers and that kind of thing. Uh We don't do that. So they do sort of um clinical side of stuff. We do non clinical side of stuff. So everything around your pay contracts, all that kind of thing we can help with. Um and um yeah, three ways of looking at it, we can help individually locally and nationally, obviously, nationally we've recently negotiated um pay increases across the board um locally if you're say in a group of doctors at a particular trust, um and you're having a sort of similar issue, we can come in and represent the whole group. Now, obviously, individually, uh we can look at your contracts like your wroter to make, make sure that you're getting what you should be getting and make sure that everything's fair in your workplace. We negotiate those contracts. Um So we know what should be in them and what shouldn't be in them. Um Yeah, so we as quick as possible. Um Last year we supported 20% of our, of our members with, with issues at work. Um So we are basically the go to people you go to hr um they may sort of fob you off. Um Not really be helpful, you may get people not really helping too much as soon as you come to us, we can get stuck in and we've got people on the ground, every hospital across the UK and we get answers. Um I think it's fair to say we're probably the strongest trade union um in the country at the moment and we only represent doctors and medical students. So we don't deal with other, other members of the NHS. Um So yeah, very specific. Uh last year as well alone, we recovered uh nearly 2 million lbs for members. So money is obviously a big part of what we do um with contracts and whatnot. So, yeah, so at any point, you're, you're unsure, you're getting paid, you're you can send your pay slips to us, um, for free. Obviously, if you're, you're getting membership free, we'll make sure that's all correct. Make sure you're getting your annual leave. Make sure, um, everything's, everything's correct. You're not working too many hours. Um, but yeah, basically looking it up for you. Um, we've got a free contract checking service as well. Um, so 25% of the contracts we check usually are wrong. Like I said, we negotiate the contract, we know what should be in them or what shouldn't be in them. Um So if, if you are on an incorrect, if there's anything incorrect in your contract and for example, you've signed it, we can still get that sorted, we can still get any money that's owed to you back because that, that was a wrong contract that was given to you in the first place. It's not your fault, that's wrong. You've signed something believing it's correct. So it's not the end of the world we could step in and, and sort that out. Um get anything you're due. Uh We also help with, with immigration support as well. So everything around visa is not just for, for you but your family too. Um Yeah, we've got you probably, you probably will know the B MJ. You've got full access to all the B MJ tools as well through the BMA. So the B MJ is kind of a wing of the, the BMA. Um You'll get um subscription to the B MJ as well as the actual B MJ magazine. Um, that's on the screen. You'll get that through the post as well as, as part of membership. So that subscription alone is a couple of 100 lbs a, a year, um, as it comes sort fortnightly. But, yeah, you get that free as part of the whole free membership. Um, so anyone study, er, sorry, anyone, anyone, uh, who, who's got a GMC number at the moment and who is, who is uh looking for work or, or has got, has got work right now. Take advantage of this and just get, get that sort of support behind you from the BMA for, for free for a year before on that link. Um Anyone who's sort of on, on the verge of getting registration, I would say just keep those details handy for, for when you get your GMC number through and, and again, take advantage of this from the get go get support from the, get go from, from us. Um We've got um 24 7 wellbeing support as well. So hopefully you don't need to use that but, but obviously you can, if you need to, um it's completely confidential of every trust. So it's just us that you'd be speaking to. Um I love to talk a lot about this but I can't just cos it would just take all night. Um So yeah, if anyone's been following what's been going on, obviously, in the UK the last couple of years. Um We've, we've had strikes. Um So that's been orchestrated by us and our, and our members. Um And we've, yeah, happy to say that we've, as things currently stand, we've got a 22.3% average increase in pay. So obviously, um you guys working, working here, you will be benefactors of that, of the work that we've been doing with members over the last couple of years. So it's 22.3% average. So what it, yeah, we've done a lot in two years. Um And, and yeah, it's, it's sort of, that's why I say that we are probably the strongest trade union in the country at the moment because of what we've all done by putting together. Um and, and working on this and striking. Um So, yeah, even more reason to join. Um We are kind of at a midpoint, well, not a midpoint, but we are, we are sort of uh looking at what happens next in April. There is um there is uh a, an increase of 2.8% muted, but we still uh we still, we are still looking for pay restoration back to levels of 2008. Um So, so we don't, we're not asking for more pay. We're just asking for what, what that money would be worth in 2008 and we're still, we're still off that as far as we're concerned. Um, so yeah, so 2.8% is what's been announced. Um, it's been what's been suggested to the, to the dentist doctors review body by the government. Um, we don't see that as being a fair amount. Um, so, yeah, possibly soon there. It's, it's, it's kind of early days but in the next few weeks, um, we will possibly be balloting for some kind of action, possibly more strike action, possibly. Um, at least, um, sort of working to rule something, um, to push that number up. So, yeah, now is a good time to obviously be part of the BMA as it has been in the past two years because we're trying to push up pay once again, 2.8% increase for this year we just don't think is, um, is great and we think we can do better again. We've had sort of what, six months of, of no, no strikes and we sort of took that deal. But yeah, that's coming down the road again and obviously you'll have your say as a member, this is sort of only of your members of the BMA. Can you, can you sort of have your say in this, whether you vote to strike or vote to whatever you doesn't mean you actually have to carry it out. But yeah, it's very important that everyone has their say and we're a strong union so that we can get the results that we've got, um, and that's sort of why we've got to, to where we have it done. There's loads of stuff as part of membership. Um, like I said, first year is completely free to, to you if you, if you're relatively new in the last 12 months to, to the UK and starting and you've got a GMC number. Um, so take advantage of it. Um, and yeah, I will try to prop up now. I think that's, yeah, that's it. Just use that QR code if you wanted to, if you wanted to join. Um Yeah, use that, remember to take I MG first year in UK and then drop me a, drop me an email with your BM aid number, er, detail at BMA dot or do UK. I'm Daniel. Um I don't know if I said at the start. Um and I'll just make sure 100% you're getting your first year free. That's it. I try to do as quick as possible. Thank you for putting up with me. Um um That's it. I'll hand you back. All right then. Thank you very much then. Um So now we've got Wise and Ben who are experienced doctors in the UK who will be running these sessions. Um I will hand it over to them. Thank you. Thanks Daniel. Hi, everyone. My name is Wise. I'm on the um anesthetic trainees at the moment in London doing anesthetics in ICU and this is Ben. I am
