And I'd like to now, welcome to the stage, Doctor Anga Gee from Oruk. And he's going to be talking a little bit about what the charity is all about and the next steps for sustainability within MSK healthcare. Thank you very much. Oh, I think you're on mute if you want to mute yourself. I apologize for that. Um Hello again, you want to share your presentation as well. We lost the presentation whilst you're muted yourself. Apologies. No, no. Thank you. You know, uh I realize I'm standing between you and coffee. So I promise this is going to be a very uh quick presentation. Um Thanks very much. Uh My name is Irish Zhangjiajie. I'm the chief executive of orthopedic Research UK. For those of you who are not familiar with our charity were based in London. The charity was founded by uh an orthopedic surgeon called Ronald for Long. And his legacy, as you may know is the fair long hip un cemented hip replacement, which is still being used today uh implanted in patient's. So today I'm going to be talking to you about our efforts towards Korean creating you're more sustainable MSK A health Um And uh basically, the core purpose of the charity is to uh use our funding in research education and innovation programs within bone joint and muscle. Well being to reduce the burden of poor MSK A health on individuals, the carers, their families, workplaces, and the uh and the, and the NHS. And by reducing the surgical and economic aspects of this burden, we will also make a significant contribution to reducing the long term environmental impact associated with the treatment of uh people with poor and escape a bit like today. You know, we, we're partnered with, with Botha to run this fantastic conference. We, you know, for various activities for research education. We, we partner with charities, leading a leading academic institutions and, and commercial organizations to uh deliver our charitable activities and, and are really, our goal is to build a m escape community across the entire orthopedic ecosystem. Uh The focus on sustainability aligns perfectly with many of our other strategic priorities, championing the use of artificial intelligence in LSK health to enhance planning and resources allocation. Some of you, you know, um we uh we first have ran uh we ran the first uh national conference on A I in orthopedics back in September. And I'm pleased to say that the second conference will uh will take place in November later this year. Uh We as a charity, we invest in nonsurgical community based interventions for people with poor NSK health um such as our multi award winning escape Pain programs, group re habitation program over a six month, uh six week period. At the end, the program, uh people who are suffering from uh knee, hip and back arthritis, you know, they feel a lot better, they're a lot happier, the pain level goes down and the quality of life this has improved. So I encourage you to have a look at that on our website. And we brought them the scope of our educational program to embrace the wider MSK A community, including those focused on pre surgical intervention, uh public health and disease prevention. And really our, our organizational commitments are very clear going forward. We want to ensure that all of the research projects that we fund, adhere to the sustainability best practices. Uh We want to allocate additional research funding and education funding to projects with clear sustainability focus. And we're delighted that we uh we started that today through the Dragons and uh research seat fund. Uh We want to increase the number of virtual educational programs and events within our portfolio to, to avoid the need for traveling uh for, for, for people and, and where you know, face to face. Uh events are absolutely necessary. We want to work with venues that are as sustainable as, as possible. So, but this is clearly not enough. Uh And we asked the question, how can we make the biggest difference to reducing impact of treating poor MSK A health on, on the NHS carbon footprint. And as with all major organizations, the NH has committed to a significant reduction in its carbon footprint, which is approximately 25 million tons CO2 per year, which represents around 4.6% of the national nations that greenhouse uh greenhouse gas emissions. Um And obviously, they've got a target to become net zero by 2045 as we had previously uh with an interim 8% reduction between 2028 and 2032. Um It's no easy task as we all know, achieving that zero over a timeframe of escalating demand for NHS services, you guys are stretched your view under huge amount of pressure, especially, you know, couple that with an aging society, uh it will inevitably require a significant overhaul of procedures and changing the way we do things. And then, you know, cultural shift in a sense, an organization that some have accused of being wasteful when it comes to resources will need to discover the virtues of reducing reusing and recycling and, and uh in a bubble and achieving net zero means helping people to avoid the need for hospital treatments, surgery and and operating theaters are particularly uh resource intensive, very hungry according to the Royal College of surgeons as well. I heard, you know, the carbon footprint of an operating department within a large UK hospital is estimated at about 5000 tons of uh CEO to pay and a single operation between 150 to 250 kg of uh CO2. So we really need smarter planning. Uh an increasingly aided by artificial intelligence. Uh in my opinion, should help improve the allocation of resources and treatment locations, treating people closer to home or even within their homes, facilitated by digital enabled care. Uh Means that, you know, fewer and shorter car journeys programs to improve the uh return rates to uh for items such as walking sticks and wheelchairs. You know, the target is about 40% but but only 22%. Uh I'll return very good initiatives are underway. As we heard earlier today from different speakers to to reduce the carbon footprint for surgery, uh reusing surgical instruments, managing solid waste more efficiently, uh conserving water and using less environmentally harmful anesthetic gases. But despite best efforts, um uh such as, you know, the Royal College of Surgeons of England, they said that the carbon neutral operating theater remains a distant prospect but, but I was really pleased to hear from an ill about his work. So public health initiatives, uh disease prevention and non surgical interventions, early diagnosis and support to patient's will have to become the primary drivers of a more environmentally sustainable healthcare system which would have a huge impact in terms of fewer operations and a more active population. This holistic approach to sustainability is expressed by uh the Academic of Medical Royal Colleges very eloquently that a sustainable healthcare system, maintains population health reduces disease burden and minimizes use of healthcare services. So, uh for us, reducing demand is the focus of uh of our charity going forward trying to encourage um and, and fund even more research into improving bone joint and muscle health and diagnosis. Uh pre surgical treatment of common MSK A conditions such as osteoporosis for, for example, especially where, where this reduces the need for surgical intervention and, and uh in the hope that we could achieve a fitter healthier and greener nation. There is really great to hear a little bit more about what ORUK is all about and actually what the the future steps with the charity is going to be with regard sustainability. And as we know, sustainability is such a wide ranging issue, it's, it's really great to hear that actually, charities thinking about it from a number of different perspectives. Absolutely. Yeah, I, I think the UK has got a very important role in muscular, skeletal and trauma and orthopedic work. And um uh you know, orthopedic surgeon, we're very grateful in our community for your support. So, thank you very much, Irish. It's a pleasure. Thank you very much.
