PATHWAY TO THE UK Anas Ahmed Hashmi Foundation year 1 LIFE IN THE UK • Depends on where you live • Southern coast– smaller Muslim population which means more difficult to get halal food. • More in the central region of the UK and London. • Expenses – food from store is reasonably cheap, restaurants definitely more expensive. Please learn how to cook. • London – rent more expensive, better salary but expenses cancel • Rent – might feel that high, London insane, houses not too big • Environment– your choice, London busy city very diverse city(place to work, not to live), other cities generally better to live, live in county if want peace and quiet + nature) • Transport – publictransport good – buses, London underground, train • Crime – can be relatively high in some areas (certain parts of London), generally lower where I am (population is older) HOW BUSY DOES IT GET? • Depends on the hospital and department you are in • Currently the country is understaffed so some departments can be pretty insane and disorganized (my current department) • Hours per week – generally 40 max but choice to work more (get compensated) • Senior help available? Mostly yes, but not always so might have to contact other specialties if in emergency situations • Paid annual leaves, study leaves WHAT DO I DO IN MED SCHOOL? 1) Don’t panic 2) Get through med school 3) Maybe do someextracurriculars WHICH YEAR DO I JOIN? • Options: 1) F1 2) F2 3) SHO/CT/IMT training 4) Even later (eg consultant, reg) F1 / FY1 • My preference • Get to know the system and NHS better • Can be quite different (not necessarily the med knowledge, more about getting acquainted with how things work here can take a while and you might be slower than the local alumni initially) • Do not need to do house job/internship in Pakistan or wherever you are. • Need provisional registration from the GMC WHEN DO I START APPLYING AND HOW? • Important bodies to be aware of 1) GMC 2) UKFPO • Start applicationprocess after final year usually from around May/June. • Start the applicationprocess before you have done the PLABs but after you have your degree. You will get the chance to submit your PLAB results during the applicationprocess because it is quite a long one. Example if you want to join F1 in 2022 • Go to high level timeline under UKFPO 2022 to view the schedule https://foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/ • Applicant’s handbook for detailed explanations • Learn how to use Oriel (you will get comfortable with it, don’t worry) • Applicants graduating from a medical school outside of the UK mustcomplete an online eligibility applicationform on Oriel (you will need to register if you have not used the system before) between Wednesday 14 July and 12:00 noon (BST) on Wednesday 4 August 2021. (This is if you want to join F1 in 2022) GMC • Provisional vs Full registration • All F1s are working with provisional registration • Don’t worry too much about the restrictions with rov reg, there aren’t too many and you’ll have an idea as you’re coming into training • Need full reg to be an F2 • Registrations explained later F2 / FY2 STANDALONE PROGRAMME • Only international students come directly into the F2programme. • Need to have finished house job/internship • Not my preference as you’re thrown into the wild without knowing what’s up or down.
