IR Juniors VENOUS DISEASE IRBITES WHAT IS IT? Acute venous thromboembolism (VTE) is caused by disruption to Virchow's triad 1. Sluggish blood flow 2. Vessel injury and 3. Hypercoagulability. Venous bloods clots cause deep vein thromboses (DVT) and pulmonary emboli (PE). Anticoagulation is the main treatment, but for treatment resistant VTE an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter can be inserted. Mechanical thrombolysis can be used for chronic or extensive VTE in veins insufficiently re-canalised by pharmacological blood thinners. DIAGNOSIS MANAGEMENT Doppler Anticoagulation Ultrasound DOAC Warfarin Heparin CTPA IVC Filter Venous stenting rID: 43274 CT Venography Chronic venous obstruction may occur after venous thrombosis with insufficient recanalisation. This can be due to anatomical IRBITE venous variants or mechanic/external compression of the vein (e.g. tumour, May-Thurner Syndrome) Interventional Radiology Curriculum for Radiograph courtesy of Dr Jayanth Keshavamurthy, Radiopaedia.org, rID: 43274 Radiopaedia.org IR Bites is a 12 part teaching series for medical students and junior doctors of any grade who want to learn more about interventional radiology. We aim to teach you the CIRSE Interventional Radiology curriculum for medical students.
