Education lead for ST Thank you all for joining today for our uh career slash recruitment event. We've got uh some great speakers coming up this evening. So I hope you guys will find it useful in your future gum slash I MT uh lives, first of all, we have Elizabeth who is under Izzy today, but she is currently in I MT and she's going to be talking to us about the I MT recruitment side of things. Hi. Uh Yeah. So I'm Izzy. I'm in I MT two in Edinburgh currently and I'm hoping to apply for um next year. Um I'm just gonna try and share my slides and we will see how that goes. I'm sorry, that's my cat. She will yell at us the entire time. If I don't let her in and guys, any questions throughout, please do put them in the chat or put your hands up. I'm sure all the speakers will be happy to take questions and anyone who feels able to put their cameras on that would also be great so that our speakers aren't looking at um nothing. And so can you guys see the slides? Yes. Oh, it's gone. Oh, there you go. Perfect. Thank you. Um So, yeah, so essentially for applying for I MT, there is a website called I MT recruitment.org dot UK and it has every single piece of information that you could possibly need. Um So basically this is your new best friend. Um I would really recommend just having this website open as a tab throughout the entire process. Um It's got a lot of information in it. Um And so it, you know, you need to find um sift through it a wee bit, but it has basically everything you need to know. Um And I think establishing the timeline is also really helpful and just so you can know for yourself when you need to apply for what obviously applying for I MT is a several stage process and there's the initial application where you do all of your points, there's long listing and then shortlisting, then you've got your interview and then you get your rankings, then you have to give your your own preferences for the program. Um And that's the whole saga in and of itself. Um So the very start of the process, it's important just to check that you're you are eligible. Um So this is all a bit wordy, but essentially there's certain boxes you need to tick in the UK to apply for IMT. And if you have either completed the UK foundation program or you are about to complete the UK Foundation program. Um So if you're in Fy two next year, then you do not need to worry if like me or like lots of people you studied, not in the UK. And then you need to demonstrate that you have all of the same competencies as somebody who's done the foundation program. And you can do this by completing a certificate of readiness to enter specialty training, which is a Crest form. As of 2024 they've updated the Crest form, so they are slightly different now. Um but generally not that much has changed. Um There's a couple of slightly specific other um um uh ways you can qualify. So if you um have done an affiliated foundation program essentially, or if you already have a training number in a different training pathway and you want to swap on training. So just make sure you tick these boxes. If you're doing the Crest form, it takes at least three months working with one consultant continuously for that three months. So do just give yourself plenty of time to get that ready. You don't want to be worrying about doing a Crest form when you're preparing for the rest of the application. Sorry, that's my cat. Um So the application form itself, there's a lot of kind of fluff and they want to know all of your personal details, quality and diversity, details your employment history. If you've gone straight from school to medical school, the foundation program, hopefully that won't be too long. But obviously, if you've done lots of interesting things that might be a bit longer and they want to know your training history, you need to have references and a fitness to practice certificate, which is easy enough to get all of your declarations. So you promise you're not going to do anything terrible. And then you just need to tick the boxes for competency and eligibility. And then finally, the important part is your evidence. So you're supporting documents and your self assessment, you can already look up on that website that I mentioned at the beginning, all of the specific documents you need for all of this. So I would really recommend getting a folder on your computer and just putting all of those documents on there. So as soon as the application is open, you're able to just load all of those documents up. I'm just going to let my cat out again. Excuse me, gout. Ok, sorry about that. Um So referees, you need to have three referees and it's really useful if you have people who know you. Well, one referee has to be your current or most recent educational supervisor. So, um it's really good if you already in August, in that first meeting you have with your educational supervisor in whatever role you are in August. If you already say, look, I'm planning on applying prior to this year, I will need you to be a, a referee it gives them a bit of a heads up as well. And just because the applications obviously open in October, so depending how much you work with your supervisor, you might not meet with them more than once necessarily before then. So it is useful um because they have to be one of one of the referees. So for competency and eligibility, so we already said either foundation program or crest form, if you have been in a different training program and you want to transfer, you might be able to transfer some competencies. It depends what the program is. Um Obviously there are transferrable skills between like surgery and medicine, but maybe not that many. Um So that's kind of on a, on a case by case basis. So with regards to the supporting evidence, um there are three areas you can kind of shine. So one area is the MCP, you're gonna have to do it anyway, by the end of IMT two. So getting a head start on, it is not a bad idea. Um If you're interested in gum, I think this does actually give people a bit of an edge in the IMT interviews because you can demonstrate a commitment to the specialty that's very specific and a little bit niche. And so I found that the interviewees in mind you were already asking me things about them. Most interviewers are going to be, you know, your general medicine specialties. So cardiology, gastro, so actually, having a candidate that's a little bit different, that's maybe wanting to do something a little bit niche and can be quite interesting, can give you lots of things to talk about. And so demonstrating your commitment specialty by, you know, even saying that you've been to this talk um by talking about um stash, um if you've done any of the courses, so there's obviously there's sti foundation courses and things like that if you've done mentoring or if you've been a mentor, and this can all just give you a bit of an edge because a lot of people applying for, I just kind of think they want to do medicine, but maybe they haven't quite got a specific direction in mind yet. And then, as I mentioned, finally, training courses. So any courses you've taken that are a bit interesting that are maybe not mandatory. So also stuff unrelated to them. So if you've done an ultrasound course, for example, and or if you've done anything additional, then then that can make your application stand out a bit. And then the bit that I think everybody dreads is the self assessment. So in six domains, you score yourself and I put the maximum score for each of the domains on the slide. But obviously, there are, you know, um steps between zero and maximum um scores some of these things between now and October you will be able to improve on and some of these things you will not, there is no point trying to get a phd in the next four months. So you know, postgraduate stuff, you either have it or you don't, don't worry too much about it. Things like oral presentation and or poster presentations, you obviously you score the maximum points if you've done a presentation at an international or national meeting, but you also score some points for regional meetings and you also score some stuff for local meetings. So even if it's quite a small, just departmental presentation about AQ I project that you've done, try and get some evidence for it because then you can score points for it. Publications again is something that realistically, unless you're already working on it between now and October, you're probably not gonna be able to get a new publication. Um But just see if you've ever been involved in any research projects and new names come up, you know, that is something you might score a few points on teaching experience is something that you maybe could again get, you know, it's difficult to design an entire thing and teach for at least three months. But there are points in between zero and five where you might be able to get some, some teaching, the training and the teaching again, that's limited and, but quality improvement.
